Do you know how to care for jewelry that has gold plating?

Do you know how to care for jewelry that has gold plating?

We all want our jewelry to be with us for a long time! The life of your jewelry depends a lot on the care you give it. In this post, we want to give you some care recommendations that will allow you to preserve your jewelry for a long time, especially those with gold plating.

Without a doubt, this is one of the topics that we are asked about the most. The first thing you should know is that in jewelry there are different techniques and processes for making gold plating, but you must keep in mind that the thickness of that layer of gold (which is measured in microns) and the purity of the gold used For the bathroom, the quality and duration of the jewelry will depend.

Although the gold plating is of very good quality, it is essential that you take some care. Follow these recommendations so that your jewelry lasts a long time:

  1. Avoid contact with lacquers, creams, or perfumes.

Regardless of the metal your jewelry is made of, the alcohol present in creams, lacquers and perfumes causes the metal to deteriorate and change color. For this reason, the recommendation is that you always apply perfume before putting on your jewelry. Once it's dry, you can put them on.

  1. Do not use them when bathing, swimming or playing sports.

The sulfates and chlorines present in swimming pools, seawater and sweat itself can be very corrosive to gold-plated jewelry. If you inevitably played sports with your jewelry on, or took a dip in the pool and forgot you had them with you, we recommend washing them with a neutral soap and drying them with a hair dryer.

  1. Do not keep them exposed to the sun or light for a long time.

Prolonged exposure to the sun or certain types of lights can cause jewelry to lose a little shine. Avoid exposing them to the sun for long periods or storing them in humid places.

  1. Save them separately

When you are not wearing your jewelry, it is best to store it separately, preserving the original packaging. If you use a jewelry box, make sure it has divisions or compartments so that you can store them separately. The reason is that when they come together they can scratch each other and in this way the gold plating layer deteriorates. At Luisa López Jewelry you find perfect bags to protect them.

Store your jewelry in its original packaging

  1. Clean them from time to time

In case the color of your jewelry changes, some greenish spots appear or you notice that it has less shine, we recommend that you immerse the piece in warm water with baking soda and scrub with a soft brush (you can use an old toothbrush) after Rinse them with clean water and dry them with a hair dryer. You will realize that they will look like the first day you bought them!

The idea is that you wear all your jewelry calmly and enjoy it! In case your pieces lose their golden color, we can gilt them again and they will look like new!
